Students will identify agricultural commodities produced in their county, along with businesses that support agriculture and agritourism opportunities available in their area. Students will sample soil from the area and conduct experiments to identify soil types. Students will construct a simple rain gauge to measure rainfall and compare their results with official totals.

American Farmers Count! Census 2020
Grades 3-5: Social Studies, Math, English Language Arts
Students will complete a family tree and write each family members name, and they state they lived in as an adult. They will identify who in their family is/was involved in agriculture. They will then transfer this information to a map of the United States. Students will choose a relative and compare census data from their state with Oklahoma. Students will read about the process of counting American farmers, as well as all Americans. They will discover the difference between the Census of Agriculture and the decennial census. They will find the main idea of a reading passage.
The Art of Growing Things
Grades 3-5: English Language Arts, Science, Visual Arts
Students will use seeds and plants to increase their vocabulary, conduct research, create a timeline and make presentations. They will observe plant growth habits in different locations in classroom and report their findings. Students will design and illustrate their own seed packets.

Students will explore some agriculture-related careers while decoding words with common suffixes.

Cotton Cycle

Students will learn about the life cycle of a cotton plant, use cotton seed as a nonstandard unit of measurement, plant cotton seeds in cups and chart their growth, draw the life cycle of a cotton plant with cotton swabs to illustrate books, count by ones and tens using cotton balls.

Students will learn characteristics of insects by creating models from an assortment of materials.

Students read about the history of land-grant universities and the Cooperative Extension Service, work in groups to find the main idea and supporting details and answer comprehension questions. As a class students make a timeline of the events leading up to the land-grant and Extension system of today. Students will read about the importance of sod in Oklahoma history and as an Oklahoma-grown product in today's economy. Students will complete math problems related to sod. Students will conduct experiments with a purchased roll of sod. Students will conduct an experiment to demonstrate the usefulness of sod in preventing soil erosion.

Students observe the growth of fungus on slices of bread.
Garden Grid
Grades 3-5: English Language Arts, Math, Science, Visual Arts, PE
Students will read about growing a garden and learn how much space each plant requires to grow. Using area and perimeter, students will create a grid and plan a garden, allowing sufficient space for each plant to grow. Students will construct newspaper pots and plant seeds or plants. They will devise experiments to see the effect they will have on plants and their growth. Students will create artwork depicting their favorite vegetables. Students will play a simple garden game as they scramble to get a chair.

Students will use the elements and principles of design to analyze artwork that portrays plowing fields. Students will discuss the artists portrayal of plowing a field.
